thankful thursday pt 2

Posted in Uncategorized by MommyTaco on 29 April 2010

I HAVE GONE DOWN ONE WHOLE PANTS SIZE!!! I cannot possibly express to any of you how much this means to me! Something I had a hard time dealing with during and after my pregnancy with the Boy was the weight gain. I know this is an issue with just about every child-bearing woman on the planet, but this isn’t about them right now – it’s about ME! 😉

During the pregnancy, I was considered high risk due to health concerns such as the cardiology problem that I had been diagnosed with years and years and years and years ago. Also I had some “girl stuff” procedures done years and years ago that caused a lot of concern for me being able to carry full-term. Because of all of this, I was put on complete exercise restriction during and for the 6 weeks post-partum. Add to that the Boy refusing to nurse and, well, I was screwed as far as that window of post-baby rapid weight loss. I went back to my desk job where I sat on my duff, then went home to take care of the Boy while Taco was working the afternoon/night shift on base.

No Time + No Motivation = No Weight Loss

Finally back in 2007 I was able to put some focus into my diet and exercise and was successful at losing 30lbs. I gained about 10 of them back several months later, but I had hit a plateau and those are never encouraging, so I lost the motivation again. As you have read in my previous post, last year was way too busy of a time for me with Taco having re-enlisted and being gone nearly the whole year.

It took me having to quit my job, move, and become a stay-at-home mom to find the time and motivation it takes to get serious about the diet and exercise thing. I have gotten busier since Taco deployed, but am doing my best to force the time in my schedule to go to the gym for an hour a day. In the first month of serious exercising, I lost 10lbs! I am down about another 5lbs more, and am planning to sit this weekend to make myself a weekly and semi-monthly schedule. There are a lot of classes that I am trying to take on post to familiarize with the Army life, and just about everything starts at 9am. That doesn’t leave me any time in the morning after I take the Boy to school to get to the gym. I’ll figure it out though, I have determination. And results, finally!

thankful thursday pt 1

Posted in deployment, military by MommyTaco on 29 April 2010

I have to sit down and share a couple of the things that I am extremely thankful for on this day in particular. Mind you there are so many things that I am thankful for, like the wonderful friends and family in my life. I’ll give each one a separate blog since I will probably ramble a little about each and don’t want you to feel like you’re reading a novel.

Re-Enlisting into Army A year really does pass fast when you sit and think back on a major event in your life. It has been one year today since Taco swore back in to the ranks of the military, this time for the Army. I can still remember that day like it was yesterday. I cannot begin to describe the pride that I felt for my man at the moment this photo was taken. Not just because such a great and wonderful person would once again be serving our country, but because of all of the hard work he put into getting to that moment.

I hope that when I share with other people the struggles he went through with his Air Force career being shattered doesn’t sound like I am being bitter. I am not. I love the Air Force just as much as I ever have, and while everyone has their faults, I do think that there are several lessons that “they” could learn from his experience. In reality, Big Boss of the Air Force will probably never hear about it, and there isn’t anything that can be done anyway. So instead, I look more on the fact that Taco has those experiences behind him that are certainly already shaping him into the kind of dedicated soldier that he has become.

That dedication came way before he ever swore that oath of enlistment, too. It took a brave man to swear it the first time. It took a faithful man to swear it again, knowing full & well what he was getting into. I am so thankful every day for the wonderful, God-fearing man that was placed into my life. Knowing the inner struggles he faced in answering the call of God and the call of duty was a difficult thing for me to watch. But at the same time, it was so amazing to see God go to work as soon as Taco said “Yes, Lord.”

He has certainly had his share of struggles even after having answered that call. But he knows that nobody ever told him it would be easy. I’m so proud of him, that he truly gives meaning behind the phrase “soldier on” – holding his head high through every task put before him. He will be blessed beyond measures and I can’t wait to see how the Lord will work in him next!

I also can’t wait for this year of deployment to pass as fast as the last year has!

my Military Spouse Appreciation Day giveaway!

Posted in blogging, military, Scentsy by MommyTaco on 19 April 2010

As mentioned in my previous post, I became a Scentsy Independent Consultant so that I can share one of my favorite things with my friends and family: Scentsy wickless candles. As a military spouse, I know that it can be hard to feel at home when the military often requires families to move to new locations every few years. Scentsy helps create a warm, inviting atmosphere that helps make a house feel more like a home. I honestly believe that the sense of smell is the main sense that triggers memories. With over 80 scents to choose from, Scentsy will not only bring back fond memories but help keep memories created in our new homes smelling familiar and comforting.

A quick 101 to Scentsy Wickless Warmers:

Scentsy wickless candles are a safe alternative to standard wicked candles. They use a highly scented wax that is warmed over a low-watt bulb. Because the wax does not dissipate while it is warmed, the only thing released into the air that you breathe is the fragrance. Full-sized warmers use a 25-watt bulb that melts the wax to the perfect kid and pet-safe temperature. Because the wax is melted at a much lower temperature, spills are quick and easy to clean up in the event that little fingers or paws got over curious. Changing scents is easy too – it can be poured directly back into the container if there is still fragrance left or straight into your lined trash bin. Simply wipe the warmer dish clean with a paper towel and add another piece of wax.

In participation of the upcoming Military Spouse Appreciation Day (Friday, May 7th), I am sponsoring a blog giveaway to three fellow military spouses. The giveaways will be held on three military spouse blogs, where each will have one winner. I reached out to my Twitter friends and fellow military spouses for anyone who would be interested in hosting a giveaway on their blogs, and have selected three wonderful hostesses. As their part of the event, not only do they host the giveaways and manage entries via their blog, but they also are going to each provide their own individual review of the Scentsy products. Each giveaway winner will receive their choice of a Scentsy warmer and three fragrance bars.

If you are interested in participating in this event, or just want to see what they think about Scentsy, please visit one of the three blogs listed below where the contest is being hosted. Entries to the giveaway will be accepted today through Wednesday, May 5th at 11:59 Eastern Time.

Scentsy Independant Consultant

A couple of years ago, a friend of mine invited me to come to a candle party at her house. I love smelly stuff for the home, so naturally I attended. What started that day has been a great friendship between me and my Scentsy warmers.

Over the course of these last couple of years, I have had countless people comment and inquire about these babies. I had one in my cubicle at work to fight the funky smell of working in a male-dominated manufacturing plant. No offense guys, but even though I sat in an office full of engineers, it could smell pretty weird at times and I’m just not down with that. The same people passed my cubicle walls day after day and still day after day I received comments on how wonderful my cubicle area smelled. For that matter, how well the Engineering offices smelled! In my home, people come to visit and as soon as they step through the door, I am greeted by not only my friends and family, but by comments on how lovely my home smells. Walking into my home makes me HAPPY because of the wonderful fragrances that greet me!

Not only did people comment on the smells, but the warmers which produced them. They don’t look like a regular candle warmer, because they aren’t. It’s not just a hot plate that you stick a candle jar on, it’s so much better than that. They are pretty and really are a wonderful thing to incorporate into any decoration style.

Any time someone would inquire about it, I would get SO excited to tell them everything there is to know about Scentsy. It was as if I was already a consultant selling the product! Ask anyone about something that they rarely use and you will probably get some vague description and a personal opinion from them that isn’t really something that would send you rushing to the store to get them one of their own. But ask them about something that they LOVE, and you will stir a pot of excitement that you can’t keep from boiling over!

With so much interest from so many of our friends and family, wanting to know how and where do I get my Scentsy product, I began to wonder if I shouldn’t sell it myself. It was a pretty big deal, never having done such a thing before and not really being the type to sell people things. It was one of the things I hated about my waitressing and telemarketing jobs – upsales – trying to get people to buy things that they didn’t really need or want. I wondered if I would actually get enough business to make it worthwhile. As with any home business type of thing, there is always an upfront startup cost and I would hate to have wasted my money on getting started in it only to go into a financial hole.

One day, a friend of mine on Twitter posted a question if anyone had heard of or used Scentsy and what they thought about it. Per usual, I got instantly excited to express my love of the product. Another friend oversaw our conversation and checked out their website, she’d never heard of Scentsy before. The interest they both expressed was the little bit of push I needed to finally decide to become a Scentsy consultant. And let me tell you, I am SO glad that I did!

I am posting all of this for more than one reason. First of all to announce to anyone who may not have heard, but I AM A SCENTSY CONSULTANT NOW. Obviously. 😉 Secondly, if anyone is interested in hearing more about or purchasing, I am shamelessly promoting my business. Scentsy now offers consultants the option of having their own web page for browsing and ordering product to be shipped directly to the customer – no more waiting for your friends to host parties! And thirdly, I have a very exciting opportunity to help me spread my love of Scentsy to some of my readers. I’m going to end with this teaser, but check back tomorrow and I’ll fill you in on all the details. In the mean time, why don’t you go give my page a browse and feed your curiousity?
